Costs, savings, and the current incentive picture for Upstate SC
Incentives and rates change, and they vary by utility territory. Here's what's real and current for Pickens, Greenville, Oconee, and Anderson County homeowners.
The 30% federal residential solar credit ended December 31, 2025
Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) was eliminated for homeowner-purchased systems installed from 2026 onward, with no phase-down. It does not apply to systems installed this year.
SC Solar Energy Tax Credit (Form TC-38)
25% of total system cost (equipment and installation), off your SC state income tax. Annual claim is capped at the lesser of $3,500 or 50% of your SC tax liability; unused credit carries forward up to 10 years, for an effective lifetime cap around $35,000. Still fully available in 2026, with no current expiration date.
Property & sales tax exemptions
- The added home value from a residential solar system (20 kW or less) is exempt from SC property taxes.
- Solar energy equipment is exempt from South Carolina's 6% sales tax.
Utility programs — Duke Energy Carolinas (SC)
Net metering / excess generation credits are available for residential systems up to 20 kW. Excess generation is generally credited at a lower avoided-cost rate (roughly 2.6–4¢/kWh in recent data) rather than full retail 1:1, with an annual true-up. There's no broad standalone cash rebate currently listed for SC residential solar; any battery-paired programs should be verified directly, as capacity and eligibility change.
Utility programs — Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative (Pickens / Easley area)
Blue Ridge's Hybrid Net Metering-Billing Rider includes a monthly grid access fee of $7.50 per kW of installed nameplate capacity. Excess energy is credited at the Cooperative's Value of Renewable Generation rate (recently around $0.065/kWh, subject to update); credits offset charges and can carry forward. There's a $150 residential interconnection application fee.
Rates and program details change and vary by exact address and utility territory. We confirm the current tariff and any remaining program capacity before your install. (Santee Cooper offers a stronger per-watt rebate, but that program does not apply in Duke Energy or Blue Ridge Electric territory.)
What's covered
Workmanship warranty: our installation work is covered under our standard workmanship warranty. CONFIRM: use the same 3-year term confirmed for roofing work, or a separate term if solar installs carry a different one.
Manufacturer warranties: panels carry their own manufacturer warranty, separate from our workmanship coverage. CONFIRM: which panel brand(s) you install, so we can list the specific warranty terms here.
Installed correctly, a solar system protects both the equipment on top and the roof underneath it — which is the reason our warranty conversation always starts with the roof.
Solar incentives and process, straight answers
Is there still a federal tax credit for solar? Not for homeowner-purchased systems. The 30% federal residential credit ended December 31, 2025, with no phase-down. Systems installed from 2026 onward don't qualify.
Are there other incentives available? Yes — primarily the South Carolina state income tax credit, plus utility-specific net metering/billing and a couple of tax exemptions. The SC Solar Energy Tax Credit (Form TC-38) covers 25% of total system cost, capped annually at the lesser of $3,500 or 50% of your SC tax liability, with unused credit carrying forward up to 10 years. Residential systems up to 20 kW are also exempt from property tax on the added value, and solar equipment is exempt from SC's 6% sales tax. On top of that, Duke Energy and Blue Ridge Electric both offer net metering / billing credit programs, though the specifics (credit rate, fees) differ by utility. Do I need a new roof before going solar? Not always. If your roof and decking are in good condition, panels can go on as-is. If the decking needs work, we replace it as part of the install so both the roof and the solar system are protected long-term.
How long does installation take? Most residential installs take 2–3 days, depending on how many panels are being installed and any HOA rules governing work start and end times.
